Monroe is a part of Morristown, the seat of Morris County. It played an important role in the liberation from Great Britain.

The first colonial settlement in Monroe occurred in 1710. The settlement was by New York and Connecticut colonists, John Ford and John Hayward. John Ford built a homestead at Ford Hill Road. His descendants named it Fordville.

Fordville later spread out into Whippany village. In 1820, the area around Fordville was designated as School District 10 and was given a new name “Monroe”. This district later changed to School District 84.

In 1828, the first Monroe School was built. It was rebuilt in 1876. It was on Whippany Road, next to the place where you have Monroe Chapel now.

Monroe was given the name in honor of James Monroe. He was the American President in 1820 when the School district of Monroe was formed. James Monroe had lived in Morristown in 1778 and was connected to Fordville. He served as a Colonel of the Continental Army while he was in Morristown. Later, he became the 5th President of the United States.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a railroad station came up at Morristown near Monroe. This was meant to serve the Erie Railroad Line. It served the people of the Monroe village and those of Cedar Knolls.

Once upon a time, Monroe extended from Horse Hill to Black Meadow swamp. Now it is almost forgotten as it has been out shadowed by Cedar Knolls, Trailwood, and all other Whippany Neighbourhoods. All that remains to bear the Monroe legacy are the Monroe Chapel and the Monroe Gardens.
